The jury of architects and interior designers appointed to choose the prize-winners of the 21st Tile of Spain Awards, in the architecture, interior design and end-of-degree project categories, met at ASCER’s head office on November 23rd 2022 decided:
Architecture category
The jury pre-selected the following finalists in the architecture category:
“A pergola opening onto a kitchen garden” by Bona fide taller (Alejandro Martínez del Río)
“Casa C” by Martín Lejárraga
“Social housing in Ibiza” by Ripoll-Tizón architects’ studio
“A residential home for people with functional disabilities in the Mar Menor area” by Bernardo Cerrato Hernández
“The Valencia Agora pavilion” by Arqueha + Miguel Arraiz
A unanimous decision was made to award the prize in the architecture category to “Social housing in Ibiza” by Ripoll-Tizón architects’ studio.
The jury praised the high architectural standards of this project, where traditional looking glazed stoneware tiles were used to guarantee aesthetic appeal and high durability. The tiles also have a decorative function, marking out filled and empty spaces so that the architecture is organized around the empty inner space that plays such an important role in the makeup of the project.
The jury decided to award two special mentions in the architecture category to two projects: “A pergola opening onto a kitchen garden” by Bona fide taller (Alejandro Martínez del Río), and “The Valencia Agora pavilion” by Arqueha+Miguel Arraiz.
In the case of the “pergola opening onto a kitchen garden”, the jury praised its capacity to regenerate a fringe area of an urban environment, in a small town in inland Castellón. A single tile model is used for the project, both as paving and for the top shelter of the pergola, which integrates an existing wash house and a retaining wall.
As for the “Valencia Agora pavilion”, the jury highlighted the use of ceramic materials as a technological solution in the creation of a civic space conceived to symbolize Valencia’s role as a design capital, using a system that could be mounted and dismounted.
Interior design category
Finalist projects in the interior design category:
“Tailor-made” by TWOBO Arquitectura
“Avila. Planning an empty space” by ALL AROUND LAB (Noelia de la Red, Jordi Ribas)
“A home/gallery in Granada’s Gran Vía” by Annona Arquitectura (Silvia Cabrera Jiménez & Felipe Hita Suárez)
“A notary’s office in Delta del Ebro” by NOS Arquitectura
“Solastalgia” by Corwyn Lund
“A refurbished house in La Garriga” by MIRAG Arquitectura
“Ca l’Ocell” by Cierto Estudio
A unanimous decision was reached by the jury to award the prize in the interior design category to “Avila. Planning an empty space” by Noelia de la Red, Jordi Ribas.
The jury highlighted the project’s capacity to minimize the use of materials and aesthetic resources. Ceramic tiles were chosen for the flooring and to clad the furniture, lending the whole project visual coherence, while also guaranteeing durability through the use of ceramic slats.
A decision was taken to award a special mention in the interior design category to the project “A home/gallery in Granada’s Gran Vía” by Annona Arquitectura (Silvia Cabrera Jiménez & Felipe Hita Suárez)
The jury praised the use of ceramic materials on the floors, walls, ceiling and furniture, taking advantage of colour to mark out new volumes created as a result of the project while also integrating and highlighting the existing mosaic.
End-of-degree project category
The jury unanimously agreed to award the prize in the end-of-degree project category to “Rampant architecture. The town and the home” by Marta Millanes Sánchez from Toledo School of Architecture.
The jury praised the use of ceramic materials as a linking thread to define different pathways throughout the home.
It decided to award two special mentions in the end-of-degree project category to two projects: “Courtyards, lounges and stairs” by Alicia de Luis Sánchez from Madrid School of Architecture and “The denser the drawing, the finer the thread” by Ana Link López from CEU San Pablo University in Madrid.
In the case of “Courtyards, lounges and stairs”, the jury commended the typological and linguistic reflections that this project involved, focused on a plot of particular urban complexity.
As for the project “The denser the drawing, the finer the thread”, the jury highlighted the value that was placed on the circularity of the building systems and on traditional materials, disciplines and social aspects.
